Dr Kitty Kioskli, CEO and Co-founder of trustilio B.V., a cybersecurity SME based in Amsterdam, shares insights on the NERO project's role in enhancing cybersecurity culture across the European Union.

NERO's Contribution to Cybersecurity Culture

The NERO project aligns with the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity's (ENISA) Cybersecurity Culture (CSC) initiatives. Dr Kioskli explains:
"NERO contributes to ENISA's CSC by offering an advanced cybersecurity ecosystem designed to promote cybersecurity awareness. It focuses on educating employees and developing a security-first culture by providing SMEs with essential resources."

Comprehensive Ecosystem for SMEs

NERO provides a robust set of tools to help SMEs build strong cybersecurity practices:
"NERO contributes to the implementation of a cybersecurity culture by providing a comprehensive ecosystem that includes a cyber immunity toolkit repository, a cyber resilience programme, and cyber awareness training via gamification."

Practical Implementation Through Use Cases

The project's effectiveness will be demonstrated through use cases in healthcare, transportation, logistics, and finance. Dr Kioskli highlights the healthcare use case:
"The first use case, regarding enhancing patient data security in healthcare demonstrates the NERO approach to improving cybersecurity culture by showcasing how advanced cybersecurity tools protect sensitive patient information from cyber threats and ensure compliance with data privacy regulations."

Addressing Common Challenges

Dr Kioskli acknowledges the challenges in implementing comprehensive cybersecurity solutions:
"A common theme across the use cases is the difficulty of integrating comprehensive cybersecurity solutions due to interoperability issues, user resistance, and the evolving nature of cyber threats. Different systems and devices often struggle to communicate effectively, complicating the implementation of unified cybersecurity measures."

Future Outlook

Despite these challenges, Dr Kioskli remains optimistic about the project's potential impact:
"We hope that all sectors will continuously adapt to the rapidly changing threat landscape, which requires ongoing updates and skilled personnel to maintain robust security."
